Simply changing a coat of paint and some distressing can give a not so lovely piece of furniture a whole new look. Annie Sloan paint is somewhat new here in Alberta, and is catching the wave. What I love is that it covers most any type of surface, no sanding, no stripping no primer, so wonderful. This piece has been painted in the Paris Grey with a dark wax distressed finish.

REMINDERS

Reminders are good in so many ways; to meetup with that special someone, to wake up on time, to complete a task, to eat, and to not take that 4 letter word, TIME, for granted. To be reminded of time past, of lost time whether past or future is essential in making the best of time in order to live without regret. In the first 3 weeks of this year I know of so many who have been reminded clearly of the preciousness of time and now the time has run out. Making, taking and using of time for those we love and put into the places we love makes for everlasting reminders and memories we leave behind.

January the first month of the year brings to mind, snow, cold and sunshine. Oh and yes.. my reminder of becoming another year older. This January however has been springlike with my first ever snowless and warm birthday.
That in itself is a gift making winter seem that much shorter.

I've never been one to make unrealistic resolutions simply because the calendar reads a new year, but rather I have tried to reflect on the year gone by. As I was pondering today, I was reminded of the blessings, challenges and hurdles that have occurred over the past 12 months, and in reality 48 months. As that is the time frame that our journey of owning and operating Wow and Then began. It has been a journey of personal and business growth and challenge. We continue to pursue our passion of creating beauty out of the discarded and look forward to what adventures 2012 will bring. Our hopes and prayers are that for each guest that visits Wow and Then, that they will enjoy every little nook and cranny that we delight in creating for their enjoyment and memories!!

This past year has been one of growth and learning in many ways.. and I await to see what challenges and adventures lie ahead with anticipation. Wow and Then is and has been a sharing of what I love and desire to share with my guests and friends. It is a place that contains bits of history, nostalgic treasures, and a place that encourages you to fill your homes with personality and comfort !!! As we anticipate the celebration of December 25th, the season has taken on its full essence at Wow and Then. The outside of the shop is now decked in greenery and even our mascot bear is sporting a white garland scarf. With the announcement of impending snow last Thursday.. I spent the afternoon enjoying the last of the warm autumn air putting fall away and stringing up winter and Christmas decor. Then.. the pretty snowflakes made the scene complete. Inside it is warm and cozy with the scent of pine boughs and the glimmer of vintage balls and decor filling the rooms. It brings me great joy to use my creativity and finds to decorate and persuade my visitors of their beauty and welcomed addition to their homes. ENJOYING THE COOL

With the onset of winter, the fall season still allows us the pleasure of spending time outdoors. It is a great time to have an outdoor picnic after an afternoon hike. Take time to be amazed by nature as it drops its blanket of leaves on the forest floor, or viewing a field seeming to be moving as it takes flight, honking through the air on its trip south. Wildlife is more visible with its cover of leaves now disappeared. Each season brings on its special qualities and I love the colors that it shares with hues only visible at this time of year.

Wow and Then is also ever changing. We welcome you to stop by as you take that incredible ride down Highway 22. Open now through to end of December THURS - SUN 12ish - 5ish..

Fall colors can be vibrant and give great contrast. That part I love.. the changing of the colors and the pretty flowers of fall.. In the shop we have started to add some of those changing colors and features.. Deep browns of vintage wood contrast wonderfully with light greens and yellows.. pictures dont do justice to the many featured products we carry, so we urge you to take a trip down. Its never too early either to think about starting to tuck away a few special gifts for Christmas.. lets see how many weeks away is it? I'll let you count.. Just try and remember to support your local and small businesses in your neck of the woods.. it goes a long way..

In support of fighting breast cancer, the village has taken the color PINK to the max and it will be visible in every possible location and image. LAZY DAYZ OF SUMMER

I remember as child.. the hot humid days of summer in Manitoba. Before we had central air in the house or air conditioning in the car. Our means of keeping cool was the furnace fan and having a kiddie pool in the back yard, and hanging a towel in the window of the car to keep the sun out. When visiting out at my grandparents farm, my cousins and I would venture into the adjacent creek.. much to my grandfathers shegrin.. as it would stir up the mud bottom. But it was good fun and cooled us off to boot.

Those were the simpler times.. not too complicated and of course as a child you tended to look at things through rose colored glasses. So glad to have those sweet memories of the Lazy Daze of Summer. Hope you have some too.

The second annual Vintage Chicks sale has come and gone. Wow it was an amazing time from set up to tear down, sunshine, rain, treasures, happy customers and FANTASTIC VENDORS. Thanks goes out to each one especially those set up outside who persevered the rain and cold, the customers took notice and on the most part made effort and comments about your well being. Creativity was vividly present along with an incredible selection of wares and treasure. I can hardly wait till next year.. well maybe I can wait a little. Our concession was once again a major hit with everyone with the delightful Amynicole Catering and Gumdrop Photography providing our guests with a memory photo using vintage hats. Hats off to all of you you did an amazing job.. you brought it and our customers took it home.. will post some pics sooon.....

It is hard to believe.. but 10 days till The Vintage Chicks Sale in Priddis. I've heard tools buzzing and had the aroma of fresh paint and the sound of creativity wafting throughout the Province of Alberta reaching me here in Calgary and at my shop Wow and Then in Longview. I've heard the excitement of vendors and customers alike and we are so excited about sharing this great venue with each one. Hope that each of you have ear marked either Friday June 10th 4 - 9 pm and Saturday June 11th 9 - 5 pm. The food at our "Inhouse Concession", run by Amy Nicole Catering, promises to be to die for and don't forget to have your momento picture taken at our " Vintage Hat Photo Booth" , photos by Gumdrop Photography with Heather at the camera.
There will be something for everyone inside and out and our hopes are that the day will be filled with fun, laughter and great finds..

We have been very busy at Wow and Then, removing a wall, repainting and replacing and adding new and refound items.. Over the month of April a transformation has taken place. Mr. Gord has spent many hours building, changing up and still is tweeking this and that.. We feel very comfortable and from the comments of our customers over the past 2 weekends they are too. We will be hosting a grand renovation sale.. the 3rd weekend in May.. food, door prizes and bring the coupon from the Country Register for a 20% discount when you spend $40 and over.. My last post was a wintery voice pleading for SPRING, well it has arrived, in fact.. my sweet grape hyacinths are now up and reaching for the warmth of the sunlight. The birds are looking to nest and even have neighbourhood sqwables about who gets what bird house.. it is very comical to watch. On our drive out the shop, calving has begun with the wee ones giving us entertainment as they seem to be moving on wobbly pegs legs. All of these signs of new life are the hopes of rebirth, life.. it is God's way of reminding us of His provision and hope.

Seeing as my shop Wow and Then, is located in the Village of Longview, Alberta,... here is a summary of the history of the village..

Located in an area that the Indians once used for hunting and gathering, Longview originally was a small community hamlet that was established at the turn of the century to service the many farms and ranches
After oil was discovered in Turner Valley in 1914 the area boomed and "Little New York" was born. The community eventually shifted a few miles west of it's present location and re-assumed the name Longview. The population swelled to an unbelievable 2500 in the oil days.
In the 1940's, as the petroleum industry declined in Longview and surrounding area, so did a large portion of the population that depended on the oilpatch for a living. Longview's long standing position in the area allowed it to survive and it pushed for and received local government in the 1960's
Currently, Longview is home to 334 residents and growing. It not only stands as an important service community but also as a "gateway" to the Kananaskis, one of the most beautiful tourism zones in Alberta.

I hope to try and continue to be a life long learner... to be forgiving, even though at times undeserved... to be more loving... even though not loved back and to be more thoughtful when others appear thoughtless and when I am overwhelmed to be more trusting... and to be ever grateful... because I have been blessed with so much.

I think there are years when one just doesn't feel like Christmas, it looks like,

sounds like and everyone and everything is telling you that there are 15 days to the big day..... but I somehow just could'nt get into it at home. Well my hubbie finally gave me the push... he dragged out the christmas tree and decorations and voila... we have a beautiful tree. Sometimes thats all it takes is a little push. With Christmas a few short weeks away.. I was reminded by another blogger of lists... I remember when my children were little, that was the only way I could get through the season.. but now they are grown.. so rather than a list of things to do... this is a list of why I like.... This time of year.

~ the music of the season, fun kinds and the very melodic Christmas stories in music, they are reminders of the past Christmas's as a child and with my own children, church choirs and school choirs
~ the lights... there is a magical glow about Christmas lights... in the country from a distance they are like beacons to travellers, welcoming them in..I wish they could be on all year
~ the aroma of the real Christmas Tree... nothing like it...
~ the house filled with the scent of cookies baking
~ the fun of finding treasures for my boys... now grown and my nieces and nephew

~ The Charlie Brown Christmas and Rudolph... even at my age
~ most of all I LOVE how that first Christmas came to be, and what it means to me

We did have a sneak preview of winter to come but the days on the most part are balmy and...halloween night was perfect for the wee ghosts and such. Now.... we look forward to the most beautiful time of year..... the sights...... the sounds..... the aromas.... must be Christmas!!! THE VINTAGE CHICKS SPRING FAIRE, WAS BOTH A SUCCESS AND A GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR ALL INVOLVED. The Vendors were awesome, the food, the venue, and our 600 + guests that showed up. We were blessed with the only 2 days of hot and dry... right up until set up it was a little dicey. Could'nt have asked for anything more... only maybe that you who didn't get a chance to make it out.... maybe next year... we already have some new ideas up our sleeve, so mark the date June 11th & 12th, 2011, same location, Priddis Community Hall, Priddis, Alberta, but keep your eye on my blog and that of the vintage chicks as we will have further news to bring you at a not so distant time. I have posted a few pics and there will be more and look on our blog thevintagechicks.blogspot.com in the next while after we have had a bit of a reprieve.
